Château de Chevilly, Quincy

Yves Lestourgie used to be a cereal farmer but decided that there was more to life than subsidies (only kidding...) about 18 years ago when, together with his wife who, very conveniently, also happens to be an oenologist, decided to embark on another type of farming - that of winemakers. Yves' father Antoine still runs the 200 ha cereal farm, by the way.

Domaine de Chevilly consists of 10 ha of vines with an average age of 15 -20 years, spread of many and varied plots, although this is a good way to mitigate against the variable climate it was not, apparently, a deliberate policy but has come about simply because they added to their holdings as and when plots became available.  There is nothing, however, at all haphazard about their work in either the vineyards or the cave as their Quincy is now firmly established as one of the best within the appellation; always typical, never rustic.Price per case 12x75cl inc. 2010 Quincy, Château de Chevilly  -  £150.00

A wine to refresh the palate and bring cheer.  Pure Sauvignon Blanc with clear and bright, ripe tropical notes behind classic grassy, herby, gooseberry aromatics.  Bright, minerally acidity balances wonderful ripe fruit flavours with hints of citrus.  The finish is clean and balanced.  As lovely a glass of Quincy that I can remember, perfect with some fish but you may need a second bottle if you open whilst cooking.

Domaine Joëlle & Gérard Descombes, Jullié

If you follow the narrow, winding roads passed the village of Julienas you will reach the small village of Jullié, carry on a bit further into the hills and you will come across the Domain of les Cotes de la Roche in the hamlet of Le Préau. Anyone who imagines Beaujolais as being flat and suitable for an easy bike ride will have their ideas cruelly dashed around here! Here, in 1973 (oil price rises, recession...) Gérard and Joëlle Descombes created their own domaine.  Things have, on the whole, gone pretty well for them and they now own some 23 hectares or so including holdings in Chenas, Julienas, Moulin A Vent and St-Amour.

The steeply sloped vineyards include some very old vines which is quite common in much of Beaujolais and they farm with a policy of minimal intervention as far as treatments are concerned. Vines grow for the main part on quite steep slopes. Growing uniquely Gamay grapes, as required in Beaujolais, the vines are pruned in the goblet style with 5 short stems bearing the grapes. The youngest vines are 8 years old whilst the oldest are nearly 90 years old. Finally insecticide and chemical treatment are restricted and carefully controlled.  This is a domaine making superb Beaujolais.

2010 Juliénas, Domaine Gerard Descombes  -  £155.40

Classic Juliénas on the nose, lifted red and black fruits, fresh, touch floral.  Bright minerally acidity and soft, fine tannins give balance to the whole-berry fruits, raspberry, red and black cherries.  Still youthful but hard to resist .
